Nebraska proved it belongs in the conversation with the top half of the Big Ten, making a strong opening statement in a decisive 31-13 victory over Michigan State. The win was far from clean, as self inflicted penalties repeatedly killed offensive drives and handed second chances to the Spartans. Yet, even with the flags and sloppy moments, the Huskers dominated the line of scrimmage and controlled the flow of the game when it mattered most.
The offense spent large portions of the night searching for its rhythm. That missing spark became even more noticeable when Jamal Rule exited the game in the first quarter after taking just 4 carries. With Rule out, the run game looked lackluster early on. The offensive line struggled initially against Michigan State’s aggressive blitz packages, occasionally looking lost in zone blocking schemes where defenders crossed their faces to make stops in the backfield. However, as the game wore on, the front five made key adjustments and stabilized pass protection.
With the running back room limited, Anthony Colandrea picked up the slack and carried the offense on his back. Colandrea was the highest producing rusher on the field, leading Nebraska with 66 rushing yards on 10 carries. Mekhi Nelson stepped into a heavier workload, contributing 61 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Colandrea and his receiving corps delivered an above average day through the air, despite a few bad dropped passes that left big plays on the turf.
Defensively, Nebraska put together another stellar performance, suffocating the Spartans and holding them to just 13 points. The secondary was exceptionally strong in man coverage, blanketing Spartan receivers downfield and pulling down two huge interceptions to kill Michigan State drives.
This team clearly possesses upper tier talent and potential, but cleaning up the messiness is non negotiable as the conference schedule ramps up. If Nebraska can eliminate the pre snap penalties, secure routine catches, and refine their offensive line fits, they have a genuine shot at finishing as a top 4 team in the Big Ten this season.
