Three-star wide receiver Tay Ellis has decommitted from Nebraska and reopened his recruitment, a surprising development given that he relocated from Texas to play his senior season in the state alongside the Huskers’ top quarterback commit.
Antayvious “Tay” Ellis, a 2027 prospect now at Omaha’s Millard South High School, announced the decision Wednesday on social media and described it as part of “God’s plan”. He had been committed to the Cornhuskers since November 2025.
Ellis originally pledged to Nebraska after an unofficial visit to Lincoln for the Blackout game against USC. At the time, he was a standout at Crowley High School in the Fort Worth area. He later shut down his recruitment in April 2026 following a visit to Miami, reaffirming his commitment and canceling other trips.
Ahead of his senior year, he transferred to Millard South, the back-to-back Nebraska Class A state champion, to join five-star quarterback and fellow Nebraska commit Trae Taylor. The two had developed chemistry on the 7-on-7 circuit and viewed the move as a way to build their bond before enrolling in Lincoln. Ellis has said the idea originated in a phone call from Taylor.
In his first game with the Patriots, Ellis did more talking than he did playing. His only highlight came after a Millard North defender fell down, leaving Tay wide open.
Per sources close to the situation, it sounds like Nebraska pulled his offer. While we don’t know 100% why his offer was pulled, I assume it came down to character concerns/off-field problems. Nebraska still holds 21 commitments in the 2027 class but may now look to add another WR to the mix or spend that money and roster spot on, I don’t know, maybe a certain 5-star TE? Only time will tell.
