The Nebraska Cornhuskers added a massive piece to their 2027 recruiting haul on Sunday when three-star tight end Joey Hunter committed to head coach Matt Rhule and the program. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Hunter, who attends Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High School becomes the latest in-state Georgia prospect to buy into Rhule’s vision for the program, and even crazier, the fourth Grayson player to commit to Nebraska in this class. He chose the Huskers after an official visit over the June 5 weekend, turning down final interest from NC State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and others. 

Hunter is ranked the No. 60 tight end nationally in the Rivals Industry Ranking and sits around No. 848 overall. While those numbers reflect a three-star evaluation, his physical tools scream Big Ten-ready. Already at 6-6 and 255 pounds, he has the frame of a classic in-line tight end who can also stretch the field. Scouts describe him as a reliable target on intermediate and short routes with strong hands and the ability to create yards after the catch. In his junior season at Grayson, he hauled in six receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns. His size and athleticism give him mismatch potential against linebackers and smaller defensive backs in the Big Ten. 

Nebraska’s staff identified Hunter as a priority once they evaluated the tight end needs for the 2027 class. Although the Huskers entered the recruitment later than some programs, they quickly built a genuine relationship. His official visit sealed the deal, especially with two already-committed Grayson teammates, Jordan Agbanoma and KD Jones, hosting him. 

Hunter’s commitment comes at a time when Nebraska is still actively pursuing other tight ends. The Huskers recently offered Seager Milholen from Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and remain in the mix for five-star Ahmad Hudson, who is currently committed to LSU. Hunter will likely be one of multiple tight ends added to the class, giving the offense versatile weapons for the future. For a program rebuilding under Rhule, landing a jumbo tight end with this kind of upside is exactly the kind of win that can snowball into more momentum on the recruiting trail.
