Nebraska wide receiver and return specialist Jacory Barney Jr. has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2026 Paul Hornung Award, recognizing college football’s most versatile player. The Louisville Sports Commission announced the list of 39 players on August 10, 2026. The award honors the most dynamic multi-position contributor in college football in memory of Hall of Famer Paul Hornung, the former Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers star known for excelling as a runner, receiver, passer, kicker, and defender.
Barney, a 6’0”, 175-pound junior, is one of the Huskers’ primary all-purpose threats. Through two seasons and 26 games at Nebraska, he has accumulated 1,891 all-purpose yards. He was also selected to the 2025 preseason watch list as a sophomore.
In 2025, Barney contributed across all phases. He recorded 45 receptions for 484 yards and five touchdowns, along with five carries for 20 yards. On special teams, he handled 22 punt returns for 270 yards and 13 kickoff returns for 275 yards. His combined return work helped him earn Third-Team All-Big Ten honors as a return specialist.
Entering his junior season in 2026, Barney has expressed a desire to remain a multi-dimensional weapon for the Cornhuskers, particularly emphasizing contributions on punt returns. With another strong year, he would have a realistic chance to approach or surpass 3,000 career all-purpose yards.
The Paul Hornung Award watch list serves as an early marker of national recognition. Finalists are typically named later in the season, with the winner announced in December and honored at a banquet in Louisville the following spring.
